Who is required to take an RBS course?

Required to take the RBS Course? Its not just bartenders and servers included in the new California law. This new law will effect the entire alcohol industry. Requiring most every one to take a Responsible Beverage Training course (RBS). We will explain what this new law entails, who and what business will be effected, when it goes into place and finally, how you can become RBS certified before the required deadline.

What is an RBS course and why is California making it a legal requirement?

RBS is short for Responsible Beverage Training. It’s goal is to provide the necessary skills to serve alcohol responsibly and mitigate alcohol-related harm. We all know things can get messy when alcohol is involved. Therefore, the purpose of California implementing a mandatory RBS training program is to help better manage that messiness. Above all, its to keep everyone safe!

An RBS course is an outline of how to make sure businesses/servers/retailers etc keep their customers safe. By getting certified, businesses can ensure that all of their employees know how to handle alcohol related situations. Courses can be completed online at your own pace. They can be done individually or by an entire corporation at once.

Who is required to take the RBS Course?

A completed RBS course is required by all employees working at an establishment with an “ABC on Premise License.” An on premise license means customers both purchase and consume alcohol at the establishment. All staff and managers will need to be certified. In short, all employees at restaurants, events, wineries, etc will need RBS. It’s for the best, we promise!

When does the RBS law take effect?

An RBS course will need to be complete by July 1st 2022. All new employees must be certified within 60 days of employment. Below is the full statement from the Alcohol and Beverage Commission:

Beginning July 2022, any ABC licensee who has an “ABC On-Premises License” will need to have their staff trained and certified in RBS within sixty days of the date of initial employment. This includes but is not limited for instance: restaurants, bars, fast casual dining, tasting rooms (including off-sale locations), hotels, and stadiums.

RBS certification means that the alcohol server has successfully completed training by an ABC approved training provider and passed the alcohol server certification exam. Once the server has successfully completed the training and exam, their certification is valid for 3 years. The alcohol server certification must be renewed prior to its expiration to remain valid.
