Have you ever wondered what the proper alcohol ratio is for drink? Wether you are a professional bartender or just making drinks for your friends, it is important to have the right consistency in your drinks. Mostly because it makes them taste better but also, so your friends and/or clients don’t get completely hammered off one drink. Especially with the holidays coming up, mixed drinks become very popular. Everyone loves a themed drink and consequently a lot of those will have several types of alcohol in them. We go over the proper amount of ounces per each alcohol. This will help you keep your drinks delicious and make sure your friends can keep coming back for more.

Bartending Certification Hard liquor

How much vodka should be in a cocktail? How much tequila is in a propers shot? Hard liquor is one the strongest things you can drink. Therefor, the quantity is lower than in other alcoholic beverages. According to Alcohol.org:

the standard for to liquors is 40% ABV.Fruit liqueurs typically range from 28% to 32%, gin ranges from 35% to 40%; vodka ranges from 35% to 46%; whiskey, rum and tequila are 40-46%; and cask strength whiskey is 55-60%.

Because of the high concentration of alcohol by volume (ABV) the standard amount per drink is 1.5 ounces. This is similar to most shot sizes. This also means that if a drink consists of multiple liquors, the sum of all of those should equal only 1.5 ounces.

Wine Alcohol content

The standard wine glass amount is 5 ounces but it is important to keep in mind that not all wines are the same. Depending on the type of wine and how it is made, there are different ABV levels. In general, the darker the one the higher the alcohol content. White wines have a range of 5-7% ABV where as a Malbec can have 13-15%. This is important to know because a 5 ounce red wine could potentially have the same alcohol content as 1.5 glasses of a white wine. Serve Safe Bartenders

Fortified wines are considered to be stronger. They are normally considered dessert wines like a sherry, port or brandy. The alcohol content for these is some where between 17-21%. They are served in a smaller glass and the standard serving is 3-4 ounces.

Beer

Your standard beer has an alcohol content of 4-7%. However, an IPA or a craft beer can be closer to 6-9%. Keep that in mind when drinking these as some of them can be close to double the amount of a regular beer. It is easy to lose track of how stong certain craft beers are. The standard beer is 15 ounces.
